Hwa Chong Institution (College Section)’s Enriching Visit to the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan
In June, our Values-In-Action Council—alongside other passionate students—embarked on a meaningful journey to preserve and celebrate Hokkien heritage. This initiative was part of the VIA Unit’s ongoing effort to foster community engagement and cultural appreciation among students.
The experience began with two days of engaging Hokkien language lessons conducted on campus by experts. These interactive sessions provided students with a valuable opportunity to gain a foundational understanding of the Hokkien dialect, a language that reflects the history and identity of many in Singapore. Through learning basic conversational phrases, students prepared themselves to interact with the elderly community. Learning was also made fun through singing Hokkien songs with the teachers.
On 26 Jun, the students visited the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan itself, where they put their new skills into practice. In a warm and lively atmosphere, they conversed with elderly members in Hokkien, bridging generational gaps through language and sincere dialogue. The highlight of the visit was a series of heartwarming performances, where students and seniors came together to sing well-loved Hokkien songs, Ji Ki Sio Hor Sua (One Small Umbrella) and Ai Pia Cia E Ya (You Must Fight to Win).
The experience left a lasting impression on all involved. Beyond appreciating the beauty and significance of the Hokkien dialect, it also reminded them of the importance of preserving cultural heritage in a rapidly modernising society. The interaction with the elderly taught us valuable lessons on empathy, respect, and the power of connection through language and music.
VIAC hopes to continue participating in similar activities in the future!
