In Memory of Mr Lee Tai Hui (1934 to 2025)
We mourn the passing of Mr Lee Tai Hui, Group Scout Leader of the Hwa Chong Scout Group, and a devoted Scouter who served the Scouting Movement in Singapore for over 70 years.
Mr Lee Tai Hui started Scouting as a boy in the 51st Southwestern Troop (formerly The Chinese High School, now Hwa Chong Institution) in 1951 and became its Troop Leader in 1953 after gaining the Queen’s Scout Badge in the same year. He was subsequently appointed by the Troop as a Scoutmaster in 1954 and went on to serve as Senior Scoutmaster (1957-58), Senior Scout Leader (later renamed Venture Scout Leader) from 1965-89 and then Group Scout Leader since 1990 until his passing in 2025. In between, he also served as the Senior Scoutmaster and Rover Scout Leader in the Anglican High School Scout Group from 1960-68, while rendering service to the Singapore Red Cross Society as a Training Officer from 1955-64.
As the longest serving member of the Singapore Training Team before his passing, he was appointed as an Assistant Deputy Camp Chief (later renamed Assistant Leader Trainer) in 1968 after attending the Wood Badge Course for Commissioners and Group Scoutmasters. In 1970, he attended the National Trainers’ Course in Malaysia and the Advanced Trainers’ Course at Gilwell Park, UK in 1992. He became a Leader Trainer in 1997 and then an Honorary Leader Trainer after he stepped down from active duty in the 2010s. At the national and HQ level, he took on the appointment of the Assistant District Commissioner (Changi) in 1968 and subsequently became a HQ Commissioner until 1975. From 1992-2000, he served as the Assistant Public Relations Commissioner of the Association.
As an active Scouter who was passionate about spreading the Movement to the Chinese schools in Singapore, he spent a decade (1958-68) giving assistance to build up numerous scout troops such as Anglican High School, Nan Hua Primary School, River Valley High School, Chong Boon School, Nanyang Primary School and other Chinese schools. To date, he has nurtured under his charge 189 Chief Commissioner’s Award holders (including three Scout Cords) and 129 President’s Scouts from Hwa Chong Institution, as well as six Queen’s Scouts from Anglican High School. The Association conferred on him the Meritorious Service Award in 1973, the Superior Service Award in 1992, the Star to Silver Lion Award in 2003 and the highest good service award of the Association, the Gold Lion Award, in 2007. In 2024, he was awarded the Lifetime Service Award for 70 years of service to the Association. Earlier in 1983, he was conferred the SAF Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for his duties rendered to the Singapore’s People’s Defence Force.
